Lawn Mole Education
What is a Lawn Mole?
Lawn mole education is very important to us. Firstly, Lawn moles are small rodents that live underground and are always feeding and digging tunnels. Most people in Sequim, WA don’t see them above-ground, but are familiar with a hill of dirt that they leave behind. A mole hill is a small to medium-sized mound of newly dug dirt that is mostly found in your lawn or flower bed.
Secondly, lawn moles are considered to be a pest by many gardeners and landscapers because they eat bulbs and other plants in a garden from below and leave volcano-looking mounds of dirt on a lawn as they dig from beneath.
Where do Lawn Moles come from?
Lawn moles in Sequim, WA are known for their thin and tube-like gray fur body that helps them move easily through tunnels underground. One unique feature they have is a second thumb on each of their front paws which helps them to move the soil to each side quickly so they can dig faster and more effectively.
They live underground their entire lives and in the wintertime they dig deeper because the surface ground is frozen.
What’s the Mole Life Cycle?
Lawn and Yard moles breed during the spring months in most parts of the United States especially in Clallam County, WA. The male mole will dig tunnels into new territories looking for females.
Once they mate, the female will give birth to a litter of 2 to 4 baby babies in the late spring or early summer. Most moles are loners when they aren’t mating and their lifespan is anywhere between 3-5 years.
Where do Lawn Moles live?
Moles like to reside in softer soil that can be found in grassy areas or moist soil that’s easier for them to dig and move dirt. Moles are very independent and live by themselves.
They have their own territory rather than living in groups and depending on the area and its food source, there can be many moles in a small geographical area like a lawn.
What do Lawn Moles eat?
A mole that lives underneath the lawn eats mostly earthworms, spiders, grubs, snails and other small insects and animals. Garden mole will eat mostly earthworms and/or flower bulbs. They catch earthworms through the tunnels and have a strong sense of movement and can sense their prey easily.
Lawn moles are mostly blind but have an excellent sense of smell, so Sequim Mole Patrol erases any human smell when setting traps.
How does a Moles act?
Lawn and yard moles are cautious and live alone. They’ll also avoid exploring above ground because of their vulnerability to other prey like hawks and bald eagles.. They aren’t aggressive unless two males are competing for the same feeding ground.
Surprisingly, lawn moles become independent relatively young at around 3-5 months, and will leave the mothers nest to establish their own territory.
